Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, is observed from a tall building, lifting the rising sun over Tokyo Harbor.  The Eiffel Tower-like orange and white structure is Tokyo Tower, a television tower standing between Mori Tower (a business and residential building) and the bay.

This crayon and ink drawing was commissioned by the Mirai Garou art gallery, in the building next to Mori Tower, which was hosting a 2008 exhibition of Alicia Bay Laurel's work, and requested a new drawing - a scene depicting Tokyo.  It was the first work in the show to be sold.
